Covid 19
( A front line nurse perspective)

NOV 3, 2020

Covid 19 has been a pandemic which will go down in history as one of the most memorable events ever! No one was prepared to handle or deal with the obstacles or the up and downs. This has taken a toll on my physical and mental health as a nurse on the frontline. I know I have alot of years to go in my career but I am optimistic about the future and ready for the challenge.

PHASE 1 vs PHASE 2

Nothing would have prepared me for a pandemic like this. Not even my 5 years in nursing school or my experiences so far. The fact is nobody was ready for this it took everyone by surprise. Before COVID-19 it was a regular routine: arrive on unit, get patients report, do rounds and start your day.

During COVID-19 the routine CHANGE!

During the first wave in March, the first thing we had to do is figure out what it is. we only knew where it came from but no one actually know what it is. One of the thing my unit struggled with was PPE supplies. When we found getting info from everywhere that the virus spread through droplet, airborne etc. One thing we know for sure, we had to have inventory supplies gowns, masks, gloves etc...

At that time it was a big shortage we have to use what we had on the unit and at the same time protect ourselves and the patients.

Now that we know more about the virus, how its spread and we enough supplies. We are at the stage where we are questioning the application of the policies in place. As we can all see the number are going up again and making the transition again to stage 2. Right now with everything going on we have to make sure that we keep our mental heath in check in order to maintain balance to avoid panic mode.

If another lockdown arrives, what to do next?

As we are in "Modified stage 2" for most regions in Ontario. That means closures of gyms, large gatherings minimized and no indoor dining at restaurants etc. From a nurse perspective, I think the government is doing the best they can and we should comply and understand their decisions to keep the economy safe. I also understand that not being to go about and living freely is not the norm and can lead to depression.

Covid is no joke, and its not a hoax (as some people might think), its a virus that is spreading fast. In my next blog post I will discuss strategies you can do to maintain safety and security if a complete lockdown should happen.
